Education
Understand mosquitoes, the diseases they spread, and how you can help reduce them around your home.
The Five D's of Prevention
- Drain — empty standing water from gutters, buckets, tarps, toys, and pet dishes weekly.
- Dusk & Dawn — avoid being outdoors at peak mosquito feeding times when possible.
- Dress — wear long sleeves and pants in light colors.
- DEET — use EPA-registered repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
- Doors — make sure window and door screens are intact.
West Nile Virus
West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in Idaho. Most infections are mild or asymptomatic, but severe neurological illness can occur. Horses should be vaccinated annually before mosquito season.
Mosquito Life Cycle
Mosquitoes lay eggs in or near standing water. Larvae and pupae develop in the water over 4–14 days depending on temperature. Targeting the aquatic stages is the most effective form of control.
